Historical Narrative as Politics: An Analysis of Images of the Past in Political Programs of the Slovak National Mov

The author analyzes the program documents of the Slovak national movement as historiographical sources. He focuses on historical thinking of Slovak patriots in the year of revolution 1848 and then in the early 1860s. He compares the two fundamental political documents of the national movement, namely the "Requests of the Slovak Nation" (1848) and the "Memorandum of the Slovak Nation" (1861). In the later the Slovak politicians proposed a fundamentally different discourse in comparison to the "Requests" (1848).

Pálka Family and its Changes over the Centuries

The family of Pálka played a significant role in cultural and economic development of the Liptov region and also in politics of the country. We can follow the destiny of the family members from the beginning of the 18th century when they had been living in Vrbica and Vrbický Hušták. Lot of family members had been occupied as shoemakers and tanners and only later as merchants. They took part in the national movement, gave it their financial support and participated in publishing of literature. During the World War II, several family members were forced to exile and took part in resistance.
