Images of the History of Ethnies in the Kingdom of Hungary in Educational Texts of the 18th Century

Emerging modern historiography was focused on the struggle against the stereotypical image of the Kingdom of Hungary which was perceived as a country of ignorance and neglected cultural life. In Protestant cultural circles the necessity to legitimize the identity of the members in the ambiance not supporting Protestantism occurred. Moreover, there was the need to prove the continuity of the previous cultural development as well.

This article deals with the mutual images and stereotypes of Slovaks and Hungarians presented in Czechoslovak, Slovak and Hungarian history textbooks published between 1918 – 1989. The textbooks employed the same principles while creating the image of the Self and the Other. In all cases the authors of the textbooks opted for creating a positive image of their own nation by employing images of its cultural and moral superiority, while the Others were characterized as immoral traitors on a lower degree of civilisational development.

National character (Nationalcharakter, Volkscharakter) as a category of scientific research had been solidly establishing itself in Austrian and Hungarian scientific discussions since the 80s of the 18th century. At the beginning it was the research subject of a complex scientific discipline known as statistics, or politics, (Statistik, Staatskunde). New scientific disciplines were formed during the first half of the 19th century. One of their goals was the examination and description of national character.

The article represents the introduction to a revue issue which is devoted to the question of ethnic stereotypes research. The author defines stereotypes as simplified mental images and representations of the world, describes their basic functions, including their cognitive, psychological and socializing functions, and their importance in forming and strengthening a group identity of an individual.
